Watched UFC 292, and was really disappointed to hear O’Malley talk about fighting Gervonta Davis post fight. It kind of sucks that more and more fighters seem to want to abandon the sport and go the gimmick boxing route. Started with Conor, then Francis, then Nate (granted he was aging and on his way out anyways but still), and now O’Malley is talking about it.
I get it, Conor made a hell of a lot of money boxing Floyd. I can see why other fighters want to do the same. That said, as a fan I really have no interest in seeing an MMA guy take a year or two away from the sport to go compete in another sport and get worked. Like, you don’t hear Nikola Jokic saying “yeah I think I’m gonna go try to be QB for the Patroits now” after winning the NBA title. It’s lame.
I don’t know if these MMA guys actually think they could beat the world class boxers they’re calling out, or if they’re strictly trying to get the bag. Either way, it’s a bit annoying. I miss the days when it felt like fighters actually wanted to create a legacy in MMA (their sport) instead of chasing the biggest payday in whatever circus fight they think they have a shot at getting.
What do you think? Are you a fan of crossover fights, or do they detract from the sport of MMA?
