In a rare win for the UFC, Noche UFC really delivered.
We got a bunch of Mexican fighters who aren’t household names (except for Rosas and Grasso) some exposition.
The UFC put together a PPV caliber event, aired it nearly for free and it was a very entertaining card. (If you don’t think this was PPV caliber by UFC standards, look at UFC 289)
September 16th, Mexican Independence Day is huge in Mexico. UFC dropped the ball by not having a May 5th event, but May 5th is not as big in Mexico. There was also no big boxing event this weekend, so even my parents watched this, and they don’t follow MMA. This was a great event to capture new fans. Mexican fans and women (and girls) who watched this, plus the PI opening in Mexico.
If you are still reading and called BS on the result of the main event. EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT IT. I’m not sure if it was home cooking, but that fight was close. I agree that was not a 10-8 last round, but more people would have been saying that last fight was a robbery had it gone 10-9 either way.
Where do we go from here? We need more events outside of the Apex. We need more events celebrating the culture and diversity of MMA fighters to bring in new fans. We don’t need to run back the main event, but if Grasso and Val cross paths again, it will be must watch sports.
