This fight just showcased what an insane talent BJ was. I have no doubt that if he just wanted to stick around at 155, that he would’ve been a champion a long time ago. Gomi was coming off a majority decision loss to Hansen, but was still considered one of the best fighters in the world. Penn was coming off his draw with Uno, and proceeded to bludgeon Gomi. The craziest thing about this is how Penn would go onto choke out a prime Matt Hughes after this, and Gomi would go on a historic run in pride in a few years. When I started watching MMA, Gomi had just beaten Krazy Horse. So I then witnessed his run through the GP and to the title. Finally seeing this, after witnessing what Gomi had done was mind blowing. Definitely a fight, and win for BJ, that ages better with time.
